“We’re all hurting from this broken budget—teachers being laid off, child care cut, libraries closed, universities raising tuition through the roof. We need leaders who will be honest about the need for tax reform to stop these cuts. We elect leaders to fix tough problems, not defend a broken status quo. Please pass HB 174 to raise revenue now.
Since more people hurting for money, it is especially important to keep public libraries funded.

Continued funding of the Illinois library systems is crucial to everything that a community can do to try to better lives – from job searching assistance, to after school programs, to seniors’ events and internet access for people of limited means – the library literally has something for everyone, and should be protected and funded.

In an economic climate that is growing worse all the time, it is more important than EVER that low-income families have access to information and libraries. People whose children cannot buy a book through school, adults searching for jobs on public computers because they do not have internet access at home, and so much more. Our nation is already behind in literacy- reading empowers children and allows adults to continue to educate themselves throughout their lives. Library staff are dedicated to helping others pursue knowledge through reading. PLEASE DO NOT CUT LIBRARY FUNDING!!!

Being unemployed for several years has resulted in a lot of cutbacks in my budget. I can no longer afford the internet, to rent dvd’s, or- some days- a newspaper. I now rely on the library for these services. However, the most important reason that I visit the library, almost daily, is to use the computer in my job search. I utilize six different libraries in the south suburban area. For people without a home computer, the library has been an invaluable resource.

Money spent on education, literacy and good family entertainment is always money well spent. Which is something that cannot be said of much of the money
that comes out of the taxes paid for by the citizens of the state of Illinois.
